    Another wordplay example that I don’t think was mentioned pops up in that crossfade with the Stovington t-shirt & the typewriter. The small metallic eagle logo is there for a connection, but the body of the typewriter merging with & supplanting the entire shirt (bird design & all) is probably a pun, too: “Adler” is a German word that means “eagle”. Perhaps also notable, since you’ve mentioned possible holocaust subtexts, is that the “adler” appears prominently on the German coat of arms.

    Thanks, Nathan, for making note of this.

    At 35:18 I don’t think Wendy comes out of an elevator, Kubrick just tricks us into assuming she does. If you look closely you can see that they appear to be hinged double doors with small windows and kick-plates that are open before, and remain open after Wendy comes through them.

    There may also have been a scene filmed in the kitchen of Wendy preparing Jack’s breakfast, as one image from the “8 pages of film scenes” in the movie tie-in paperback suggests;

      Sorry, forgot to respond. You’re right. She doesn’t come out of an elevator. Thanks for pointing this out.

    I like your analysis.

    I will quibble with the year. The date of the Playgirl magazine is a misdirect. You need to pay attention to the year of the Grady murders (1970) and extend your magical number thinking theory.

    Kubrick set the film present day, the very year it was released. The implication that the hotel gets a sacrifice every 10 years. 10 is a perfect number. It is the end and beginning of a cycle.

    That makes the last day the Torrances spend at the hotel Thursday, December 11, 1980. 11 is both a day of evil and the punishment of evil.
