INNOCENCE |
I
poked around for image ideas. I seem to have been an artist's model many
times over the years, and I found that theme sort of funny, since I'm
supposed to be an artist myself. So, I'm attaching some jpg scans of
some stuff. The first one is a watercolor portrait of me done by my
Grandma Doug, who lived to be 99-1/2. She did a series of 4 paintings of
the first 4 (out of 6) kids in our family. My older sister, Debbie, was
a walnut, my older brother, Larry (or Dougie at the time) was a banana
(hmmmmm), I was an apple, and Kerry was a pineapple. She wrote poems and
taped them to the back of each painting, but I can't find mine. |

and baker). I look like Burt Lancaster in "Here to Eternity." |

| Here I
am as part of "miss x presents camino del oro" by Ruth Ava
Lyons ©1988.
Ruth spray painted all this common stuff
gold, then piled it onto wheeled carts and grocery baskets (also sprayed
gold) and hauled the stuff up and down Tryon street during a Charlotte
gallery crawl night. It was hilarious, but you know, everything really
looked RICH. Amazing what a little gold spray paint can do. After it was
over, one of the neighborhood homeless guys who had been helping pull
carts begged her to let him keep the gold shopping cart, which she did.
He stuck one of the gold spray painted plastic yard rooster on the front
of the cart. They asked me to model with her piece because they knew I
already had the fake gold lameé pantsuit. I did all these stupid
body building poses, then afterwards we walked across the street from
their studio to this tiny redneck bar. They clapped for us (all 6 people
in the bar) when we walked in. It was embarrassing because I didn't
think anyone was watching. Then I looked up at the TV in the corner, and
there was a female body building contest on. Too bizarre. |

This
image was a combined effort of Tom Thoune and Raymond Grubb (same
Raymond as before). I'd just broken up with my boyfriend of 3 years, and
so I decided to rent a nun's costume for halloween. Raymond took lots of
photos, then Tom made a three-paneled wooden icon for me, with this
painted photo (with real gold leaf) of me in the center and images of
Tom and Raymond on either side. I keep it on my dresser. |

KIND OF BUT MORE MARTHA WHO WAS SUSIE BUT IS NOW BENZING NOT STEVENSON |
This was
part of a real art project called "Becoming Saints" that I did
with Martha Benzing (originally Susie Stevenson). She had been invited
to be in an art book show at a little gallery in Soho. We did a whole
fake book about our attempt to become saints, complete with a signed
postcard from John Paul that had been mailed from Italy, childhood
photos, photos of us measuring the Empire State building, pages from a
book detailing requirements for living sainthood, etc. It was Martha's
idea . . . but ah halped! This "newspaper" article was the
beginning page. |

I
swear, I JUST NOW looked at Marta's page. I had NO idea you'd made her
into a nun! (Her page is fantastic, I love it) It's a strange coincidence
that I sent you not one, but TWO images with me as a nun. That's what I
get for being slack about keeping up with the website. Sorry. . . no need
to be redundant! I have another image I'll send you instead. I have a
portrait that Tom Thoune did of me with a big blue bouffant hairdo and
cigarette butt necklace and earrings, with foil candy wrappers in the
background and "Douglas butt" shapes in the corners of the
frame. It's really beautiful. I have to take a polaroid of it first so I
can scan it. . . I'll send it tomorrow.
