I remember when I was a kid it was exciting to ride the train 4
2008

Our experience at the park is nearly a blank for me. I don't remember my mother being there though she was. I mean she's like a vacant black hole. She was bitter if we tried to do anything to entertain our son, or see anything, after our drive across country to visit them, and the few places we went she refused to participate, trying to make us feel anxious and guilty, compelling us to leave the few places we went almost immediately. I would look at grandmothers, like the one sitting before me on the train ride, and consider how relatively normal it is for a grandmother to hold a grandchild, or put an affectionate arm around them, but this was something neither of my parents could or would do, just as they had never done with me. My mother would never have ridden on a kiddie train with my son and attempted to share his joy and excitement, or even communicate any interest. She was always the child and adamant that the focus be on her alone.
