But my husband, sitting there next to him, knew better, and was only there because I was hoping to make the reconciliation work, which had been initiated by my parents. But there was no real reconciliation, and he was as distant and ruthless as ever. The hat leaves me confused. Was he trying to convince himself he was a good guy? Did he want it all to be good times? Or was he trying to convince others with this mask, like myself, and my husband, that all was good and he was good, that this was who he had become out in sunny Arizona?
