My father's cap reads, "Life is good." A child will often love their parents, regardless of how they are treated by them, so when I look at that hat I feel a heartfelt nudge of painful sympathy, thinking, "Maybe he had a couple of years there where he wanted to be a good father and make believe that life was good."
