The Grand Canyon #1

2005

On the series: Because the Grand Canyon was such a trademark tourist destination for vacationing families, and probably as I'd seen unremarkable photos of it, I took for granted that it's so-called grandeur was Disney hype and never felt compelled to visit. Then one day it was within range rather than out of the way and as others said, "Let's go," I said sure, why not. There's a very good reason people talk about it being one of the great natural wonders of the world and come from around the globe to visit. It's a place to confront essential primitive questions and feel what it is to stand at the edge of the universe. And it's a wonderful spot also for experiencing a feeling of communion with humanity, for there is unlikely to be anyone else around one who isn't experiencing the same dumbstruck awe.
