The Child Experiments with Being a Mummy
Digital photo with post-production
2007
On the series: These portraits were more collaborative efforts with my young son, than my simply taking pictures of him. He would prepare a situation and would ask that a picture be taken, which is how the series began. He wanted to see how what he'd dreamed up looked like through the eye of the camera, and enjoyed having it preserved--probably like most children. Then when I was working on a picture in post production I would ask him what he thought as we both conjured a photo befitting his dream.
On this photo: H.o.p. tore up a white sheet we'd always used for shadow puppet plays and dressed himself as a mummy for the Halloween of 2007. Every house was very impressed with the costume and went on at length about it, I think because it wasn't store bought. "What a great costume! That's wonderful!" And H.o.p. is one of those kids who enjoys the meeting people. At every house where the people engaged with him and conversed, he came away saying, "That was the best!" And was particularly pleased when he got to meet their pets as well.
