Restaurant Buddha
2011

The Laughing Buddha--Budai, Hotei--whose aspect and rotund belly symbolize joyful abundance, the sack the monk is sometimes depicted as carrying perhaps representing wealth, such as material, or that here is a power that divests one of their sorrows. It is good luck to rub his stomach. The belly taken for granted, I chose to get in close and do a portrait of this Buddha's face, which is such a common sight in some environments that it becomes mundane, and yet may be sorely missed if not present. In a restaurant, he not only represents success for the owner, the one who feeds, but the pleasure of the patron in paying for and receiving a good meal, nourishment.
