"Oops! Would you hold on a second while we reattribute or rephrase…or remove the quotes"

The Big Brass Blog Alliance takes me to The Bulldog Says who remarks today on the CNN article on the Army releasing a statement after a Sunday car bombing that included a quote that is identical to one following a car bombing on July 13.

The July 13th quote:

“‘The terrorists are attacking the infrastructure, the children and all of Iraq,’ said one Iraqi man who preferred not to be identified. ‘They are enemies of humanity without religion or any sort of ethics. They have attacked my community today and I will now take the fight to the terrorists.’”

Now copy that and place it in the Sunday release:

“‘The terrorists are attacking the infrastructure, the ISF and all of Iraq. They are enemies of humanity without religion or any sort of ethics. They have attacked my community today and I will now take the fight to the terrorists,’ said one Iraqi man who preferred not to be identified.”

The Task Force Baghdad 3rd Infantry Division was the source of both quotes.

As to how this happened, the military report they’re looking into it and rather than attributing the statement to an unidentified Iraqi man they decided to release the statement without a quotation.

Remove the quotation marks and it becomes a Bush speech.

Y’know, you’re not supposed to use PSYOPS against the People At Home.

At least, you’re not supposed to.

There’s a law against it.

Hardy-har-har.

Oh, yeah, it’s only PSYOPS if you call it PSYOPS. Forgot that.

I did a search on the internet in a number of search engines and curiously came up with not a single instance of the above quote, nor any part of it. Not even, “The terrorists are attacking the infrastructure.”

A search did come up with one other instance of, “said one Iraqi man who preferred not to be identified.” A June 20 article that I only find posted by Anonymous at footballrefugees..com. No other place. And contains also a quote from the 3rd Infantry Division.

“We are very interested in helping the youth of Sadr City. This program is a credit to the local government and the Sports Committee Chairman of Sadr City,” said Lt. Col. Gary Luck, commander of 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

Players proudly wore their new uniforms June 17 in a game between the Sadr City All Stars, Region 1 vs. Region 2 at the Air Force Sports Club.

“The return of competitive football (soccer) to Baghdad is a good sign that normalcy is returning to our city,” said one Iraqi man who preferred not to be identified. “Soccer is beyond politics. The game occupies our memories and our dreams for the future.

I think all of us here want to see our teams playing on the world stage.

“That we can enjoy attending a game, safely and without security issues, goes a long way to convince the rest of the citizens that normal life is returning,” the man added.

“The citizens of Iraq will see this and be proud of the progress our new government is making.”

The 3rd Infantry division is out of Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Army Air Field and Fort Benning, Georgia. They were deployed in Kuwait an Iraq, returned home at the end of September 2003 and then were redeployed in January 2005.
