Travelers Motel, Winder, Georgia

2006

The Travelers Motel was once located at 160 West May Street in Winder, Georga, northwest of Atlanta. A Google snippet view from a book that mentions it informs, "Winder acquired its first motel when the modern , air-conditioned Travelers Motel was opened in 1954..." A couple of postcards of the motel, in an older form are to be found on sites that sell such. A postcard that shows much the same facade, but with a more classic, less perfunctory sign, describes the motel as having 24 units with modernistic furnishings, tile shower combinations, free television, excellent eating facilities nearby and king size beds. King beds were not an option in mid-century America. An earlier postcard which must be from the 1950s shows the same classic sign and a facade more inviting with florid screen doors on each room, and the motel appearing to have had originally a more rustic appearance with stained, vertical wood boarding above the lower brick, whereas my photo shows yellow painted brick above the red. Fortunately, Google captured a view of the motel in 2008, a little later than my photograph which was taken in 2006 and captured a taxi in the parking lot. I knew when I took the photo that this motel was likely not going to be around much longer--I was surprised that it was still standing--and it has been since replaced with an Aldi grocery store.
