{"id":1346,"date":"2007-04-25T00:41:00","date_gmt":"2007-04-25T04:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idyllopuspress.com\/meanwhile\/?p=1346"},"modified":"2014-03-09T04:39:01","modified_gmt":"2014-03-09T08:39:01","slug":"somehow-i-never-pictured-hypatia-like-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idyllopuspress.com\/meanwhile\/1346\/somehow-i-never-pictured-hypatia-like-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Somehow I never pictured Hypatia like this&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m so tired I can hardly focus but I&#8217;ve had this sitting on my computer for a couple days and it&#8217;s time to clear the desk.<\/p>\n<p>First confounded then allured by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Hypatia_(Charles_William_Mitchell).jpg\">pre-Raphaelite art<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;I have just wasted some time trying to read Charles Kingsley&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/dirs\/etext04\/hypta10.txt\">Hypatia<\/a>, upon which this painting of the pagan, Greek philosopher, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypatia_of_Alexandria\">by Charles Williams Mitchell<\/a>,  is said to be based.  She in nubile form (though she was probably murdered in her sixties, but what fun is that) about to be be torn apart by a Christian mob, having just herself apparently been converted to Christianity.  So goes Charles Kingsley&#8217;s story and yes I spy a sardonic moral there (maybe) but I&#8217;ve read the book is supposed to be in parts humorous, and if it&#8217;s black humor it is so soppy with overwrought flesh and spirituality that it&#8217;s difficult to detect, unless it&#8217;s very very very black humor, and the determined manner of overwroughtness has me thinking this isn&#8217;t the case.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone have good words to say about this book before I put it down?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m so tired I can hardly focus but I&#8217;ve had this sitting on my computer for a couple days and it&#8217;s time to clear the desk.
