  • Le Mepris

Purchased the music of Georges Delerue for Godard’s “Le Mepris”. 2 CDs were left at Amazon but I opted for downloading through iTunes. One of my favorite movies by Godard. Was reminded of it when watching a Danish film and recognized the music used was Delerue’s.

  • Someone knew whereof they wrote the scene…

You know that scene in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” where Ellen Burstyn is about to bash her head on the steering wheel with her 11-y-o son telling her over and over the same joke?

  • Vegas in Space

So I’m sitting here watching “Vegas in Space” (a Troma production) and they are showing an overhead shot of the…city…on the alien planet and a closer shot reveals all the buildings with their skyward soaring slim line architecture are fingernail polish bottles. And a bracelet. One of the buildings is a bracelet. I love this.…

  • The Wrong Box

If you’ve never seen “The Wrong Box”, and you hear the names Peter Sellers, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Michael Caine, and think it worth watching, there’s an even better reason. Wilfrid Lawson, who plays the butler, Peacock. What I wonder is if Albert Finney borrowed on Lawson for Scrooge? It sure seems like he…

  • I decided there was no rationalizing it

Barry Mahon’s oeuvre consists primarily of 60s sex flicks/exploitation films, though his bio at IMDB focuses on his having been Errol Flynn’s manager. At the end of his production career he did a few children’s films, showcasing his son, which are supposed to be…bizarre. The question? How can I rationalize spending $30 on a DVD…

  • Interesting Russian animation from 1975

  • Les Processus at Youtube

A really striking, unusual animation style.

  • Alice’s Restaurant

Watched “Alice’s Restaurant” the other night. I was too young to see the movie when it came out and then my general disaffection with hippydom (which mutated into vapid discodom) combined with having heard the film wasn’t very good, meant its falling off my radar. I’ve also read some reviews of the movie and a…

  • Youtube Viewing

Now I know what a PIT maneuver is. (So this is two years old, it’s still an amazing vid. PITs are not intended to be used during high speed chases or when there are dangerous obstacles on the side of the road. Only sensible. Using the PIT on this guy on an overpass was not.)…

  • “The Innocents”

Took the time to read Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” yesterday after watching “The Innocents” (beautiful cinematography, remarkable performance by Deborah Kerr). Hadn’t read James in years. Quite a novel.

  • Hiroshi Teshigahara

This morning IFC was running Hiroshi Teshigahara’s “Face of Another”, based on the book by Kobo Abe, screenplay written by Kobo Abe. It was through Teshigahara’s films that I was introduced to the works of Kobo Abe many years ago. Highly recommend both.

  • “How the West Was Won”

Sitting here highly amused that because of the Cinerama technique used in the 1963 cheeselog “How the West was Won” the costumes were hand sewn for sake of realist detail, yet they had Carroll Baker, b. 1931, playing the mother of the naive youngster George Peppard, who was born in 1928. Cheeselog of a plot…
