Displaying a few musician genes

“That song is done with an accordion, isn’t it? And a piano. That’s really cool. I didn’t know that a piano could make it sound like something was about to happen in the darkness or in the big city. They had an accordion in the movie called Madeline. And that’s Russian music, isn’t it.”

He was right, it was Russian music being played.

H.o.p. now says he wants to learn accordion.

H.o.p.’s musings are music to my ears.

Some day I would like very much to give him music lessons, in which ever instrument he prefers — if I don’t know how to play it, I will learn, just for him, attempting to keep 3 steps ahead of his learning level.

My first instrument (via pro lessons) was the accordian. First amateur — don’t laugh — the ukulele. It was the perfect accompaniment to performing the soft shoe (tap dance) on the hardwood floors, after we rolled back the wool rug and sprinkled salt on the floor.

My step-father and teacher had, in his youth, been a performer in Vaudeville.

I had a strange childhood, now that I look back on it. But, memories like these make me smile.

You guys sprinkled salt on the hardwood floors? Kate, that’s dedication.

Marty too plays accordion but only picked it up in the last 10 years or so.

I’ve a musician friend who picked up soft shoe the past few years. And spoons. She plays the spoons.

I think performer/entertainer lifestyles are counted by most people as a peculiar sort of environment in which to grow up. At least they used to be more so than now. When I was a child, no one ever talked about parents as musicians.
