In Texas and probably everywhere with a significant Mexican-American population, Obama signs had the Obama logo plus the words “Sí se puede,” to translate “yes, we can.” This was César Chavez’s slogan, and most Mexican-American’s know that. The translation is not literal, but in spirit at least is correct.

But last night I was watching a Mexico TV channel, Televisa maybe, and they were explaining Obama’s slogan as an English translation of Chavez’s “sí se puede” in a way that implied that the Obama campaign actually got the slogan from the California farm workers and translated into English. I am pretty sure that’s wrong, but I thought it was very cool that they thought so, or more likely, that they thought of it as a way to explain the slogan in Mexico.

Jim, I have read this has been going around for a number of months. There could possibly be a link or it could be one of those things that a nanosecond after being grasped from the ether is realized as being broadly inclusive, an umbrella intended to cover a number of groups which may each have their own associations with the phrase.

It’s my supposition that it was at least understood as carrying especial meaning for a particular demographic.

Gin, I do wish you’d been there–you would have loved it.
