Scottie speaks the truth in spite of himself

So we were scraping the flesh off artichoke leaves and eating shrimp and watching Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” which we have on DVD (why in the world is it full screen). The blog will make it seem that about all I ever watch are antiwar films, because I mention film very little and when I do it’s almost always an antiwar film. And it may be true. Anyway, we were watching that great dead shiny steel eyed performance of Sterling Hayden as Jack D. Ripper sucking down his cigars, revealing to Mandrake he’s unplugged the bomb because of communists and women seeking to compromise his life’s essence, sap his bodily fluids, and my husband noted that yep here he reveals he’s insane and I said nope not at all doesn’t sound any more insane than what I’ve heard the past how many years, sounds as rational as Bush Co. Republicans.

McClellan at Thursday’s White House press briefing had this to say on Rove’s recent characterization of Democrats:

MR. McCLELLAN: I think it’s talking about the different philosophies for winning the war on terrorism. The President recognizes that the way to win the war on terrorism is to take the fight to the enemy, to stay on the offensive, and to work to spread freedom and democracy to defend the ideology of hatred that they espouse, and the ideology of tyranny and oppression.

I copied this directly from the White House press briefing page and I don’t have a problem with this. If I’m reading it correctly then I thoroughly agree. Bush recognizes the way to win the war on terrorism (well I don’t agree on that part) is to take the fight to the enemy, to stay on the offensive, and to work to spread freedom and democracy to defend the ideology of hated that they espouse, and the ideology of tyranny and oppression.

Yeah, I’d agree that Bush has been working, in the name of “freedom and democracy” to defend hatred and tyranny and oppression. I don’t have a problem with McClellan’s analysis there.

Seriously, when looking for political satire on the Republicans, it’s best to go straight to the Republicans themselves.

CONDI RICE SATIRE?

By Peter Fredson

June 20, 2005

Today I saw a news item about Condoleezza Rice that had me wondering about her sincerity.

Here are some quotes direct from the great George Bush sycophant:

“We are all concerned for the future of Egypt’s reforms when peaceful supporters of democracy — men and women — are not free from violence. The day must come when the rule of law replaces emergency decrees, and when the independent judiciary replaces arbitrary justice,”

“Egypt’s elections, including the parliamentary elections, must meet objective standards that define every free election … International election monitors and observers must have unrestricted access.”

“I will have a chance when I’m in Egypt to talk more about the need for reform, about the need for the Middle East and Middle Eastern leaders to hear the voices of their people and their people’s desire for reform,”

“Very often people talked about the Middle East somehow being different, that what we needed to worry about in the Middle East was stability,”

“And what we learned is that we were getting neither stability nor liberty and freedom; we were getting instead a growth of extremism because people did not have channels through which to express themselves politically,” she added. “The time has come for the unelected few to release their grip of the aspirations of the people of Iran” she said, saying the Iranian people were losing patience with the oppressive regime.

“It is time for Syria to join the progress that is going on all over the region” she said, noting that Damascus “continues to harbor or directly support groups committed to violence both in Iraq and the Palestinian territories”. She said democracy cannot work if “certain groups have one foot in the realm of politics and one foot in the camp of terror”.

All those lovely diplomatic statements come from a person that urged death and destruction to Saddam Hussein, followed by collateral damage to other Iraqis. This is the one that talked about “mushroom clouds” from Iraq and the urgent necessity to rain down Shock and Awe on a sovereign nation.

This is the one that talked about “yellow cake” and the imminent threat to the United States. This is one of the people bullying the United Nations, one of the people urging UN inspectors to get out of Iraq so Bush could get in.

This is a genuine neo-con who favors corporate executives over a democracy, who favors preemption instead of diplomacy, who looks benignly on killing Iraqis to seize their oil. This is the person that the Downing Street Memo said talked incessantly of “regime change” and was one of the people desperately looking for a pretext to go to war, and one of the people most responsible for imposing a lie on Congress and the American public.

But the Bush bullying of its allies could hurt her credibility because of the unnecessary death of American soldiers, the Millennium corruption, the destruction of Iraqi lives, houses and resources, the American abuse of Iraqi detainees, the incredibly illegal detention and disregard of judicial proceedings in Guantanamo, the arrogant, secretive and deceptive policies of Bush that include making war on Iran and Syria and any other nation that Bush thinks will give him profit and glory.

So, I must conclude that the statements of Condi Rice, regarding the Bush administration bringing peace, freedom and democracy to anyplace, is a continuation of Bush deception or is pure political satire.

Thing is, Jack D. Ripper was clearly insane, while Bush & Co. are simply corrupt , supported by idealogue insanities, and are promoting and seeking to purify the corruption with the kind of reality-denying propaganda that simply sounds insane when compared to facts, and makes for an American public gulping down and regurgitating schizophrenic perspectives.

Pause, for a moment, to reflect on what passes for sane in our country. Then, and only then, proceed to open your dictionary to read the meaning of insane.

But before getting tangled up in armchair diagnoses of clinical terms like psychotic or neurotic to describe America’s ruling class, let’s begin where the Oxford thesaurus does, with “not of sound mind; extremely foolish” and let that roll around in our cortices for a moment. Go ahead and apply that standard to US policy–foreign or domestic–and see what conclusion you come to.

And because–as my friend over at Arvin Hill repeatedly reminds me–there is a logic to things both mechanical and imaginative if we simply take the time to look, consider the synonym demented (defined as “impaired reasoning due to brain disease or injury”), and see how often you can apply that characteristic to members of Congress or the President’s cabinet.

Then ask your friendly neighborhood constitutional scholar what the lawful prescription is when we belatedly find we’ve elected the criminally insane to manage our federal affairs. It might surprise you.

Well, they’re crazy but they’re not. They’re crazy the way Goebbels was crazy, or his master. Being stark staring mad is not necessarily an impediment to effective political action, and in certain circumstances is the opposite. Up until recently it has probably helped them, but I think they overreached in Iraq–they’re crazy, after all–and I occasionally allow myself a bit of optimism that the tide is turning.

Of course, when they see that they are losing the public’s confidence, they will–naturally–do something else crazy. All they need is a good excuse. I think they are actually hoping for another terrorist attack, a major one.
