The recalcitrant vacuum

There are worse things than a Eureka Altima. The name of one is Bissel. This is a vacuum to hate. I know. Because I now one one and I hate the thing. It’s a vacuum that wants nothing to do with vacuuming. All it wants is to sit in its box. But its box was promptly made into a spaceship. I told the Bissel to deal with this fact of life then put it in the front room where it is happy to sit and soak up the sun and hope I never touch it. “Use your Dust Buster,” it told me the last time I looked at it. And I did.

I’m writing and painting so won’t be dropping by much I don’t think.

Having gotten rid of all the carpets in our house several years ago (with the aid of a flood) we were pretty much relieved of the curse of vacuum cleaners. I sweep the house with a broom pretty regularly, and I find it pleasant work, and mentally restful. About twice a year I will bring in my shop vac from the garage and suck dirt out from under things the broom can’t reach, but otherwise I get by without Eurekas or Hoovers or any of that. Life without carpets is better.

You won’t find me living in a place with wall-to-wall, but I do like area rugs though they are dust and dirt catchers.

I’m tired of vacuums but not enough to toss the area rugs.
