This is the first photo from The Child Experiments series, done before I even acquired a camera, taken on my phone. I took the photo, H.o.p. eager for me to capture his playing at being the bird–he had wanted wings so we wrapped paper or felt around his arms and attached a feather, as basic a wing treatment as there can be but just fine and perfect for a young child. And it occurred to me as I took it that I ought to do a series of the child experimenting with play, at being all these different things a child experiments at being as they discover who they are and the world around them.
