These portraits are more collaborative efforts with my son than my simply taking pictures of him. They began with his preparing a situation and most often asking that a picture be taken. He wanted to see what he'd dreamed up looks like through the eye of the camera, and enjoyed having it preserved--probably like most children. Then when working on a picture in post production I would ask him what he thought and as he grew older we would discuss the finer points of manipulating color etc. He became a little photo bug and is always taking snapshots and making little movies, thus the portraits became fewer and fewer as he more frequently took his place behind the camera.
The long and short of it is I like side-of-the-road and through-the-windshield photos.

I like palm trees okay, and cactus okay, but put them together and it's like nirvana.

My husband was born in New Orleans and spent a few years growing up in Gulfport, Mississippi. His mother's family was one that had been for generations settled in the gulf area of Mississippi and Louisiana and thus he had a number of relatives who were affected by Katrina, some profoundly. These photos were taken of the Biloxi/Gulfport area late in November 2006, over a year after Katrina. The neighborhood in which my husband grew up was no longer there.
